October 12, 2011 |
By Don Alt On October 6 the Boundary County Middle School 7th and 8th grade football teams traveled to Priest River for two games. The 7th grade played tough, but still remained very inconsistent on offense. They gave up a first quarter touchdown and that was all Priest River would need to win the game 8-0. Nick Sabin and Jesse Dunham turned in good games defensively for Bonners Ferry. The 8th grade team played very well offensively and defensively. Collin Vickers opened the scoring in the second quarter with a good six yard run for a score and Jason Shutes kicked the point after touchdown for and 8 to 0 lead. One difference in junior high and 5th and 6th grade football is that kicking the extra point is worth 2 points. This is done to work on the kicking game. Bonners drove the ball inside the 10 yard line on their next possession, turning it over on downs. Christopher English jumped on a fumble in the endzone to put Bonners up 14-0. The extra point was no good. After stopping Priest River on their next possession, Bonners moved the ball down field and scored on another Vickers touchdown run of 20 yards putting Bonners up 20 to 0. Bonners would have another shot at the endzone before half time after a forced fumble by the defense. Jason Shutes threw a nice pass to Caleb Blackmore, setting up a first and goal. Shutes threw an interception in the endzone, ending a dominate second quarter of football for the Badgers. On the first play of the 3rd quarter Vickers rumbled 65 yards for his third touchdown of the day. This run was marked by Tanner Lierman making three very good blocks during the play that sprung Vickers for the score. Shutes kicked the extra point and Bonners was up 28 to 0. Badgers 28, Priest River 0 final score. On October 8, the Boundary County Middle School 7th and 8th grade football teams traveled to Lakeland Junior High for two games. The 7th grade showed an incredible amount of inprovement in this game, both in execution of their offense and tackling skills. Bonners drove the ball inside the 10 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs. Mic Ryan then recovered a Lakeland fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The point after touchdown was no good and Bonners led 6 to 0 after one quarter. In the second quarter Lakeland ran back a punt inside the 10 yard line and scored on a third down run to make it 6 to 6. Ryan blocked the point after touchdown kick. With two minutes left in the half, Bonners would go to the air. Caleb Stockton completed two passes to Ryker Hittle and three to Nick Sabin to put the ball inside the 5 yard line with 10 seconds left in the half. Sabin ran the ball in from one yard out on the last play of the half. Stockton ran the PAT in for a 13 to 6 lead at halftime. Defense dominated the 3rd quarter with neither team scoring. In the fourth, Lakeland would score on three long touchdown passes to lead 26 to 13. Bonner's answered with a Stockton to Sabin touchdown and a conversion to bring Bonners with in six; 26 to 20. Bonner's luck ran out with one minute left as Stockton threw an interception to end the Badger threat at the 30 yard line. Badgers 20, Lakeland 26, final score. The 8th grade kept on improving against Lakeland. Davis Merrifield scored from 8 yards out to make it 6 to 0 in the first quarter. Lakeland answered with a pass for a touchdown in the second quarter making it 6 to 6 at half. On the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Merrifield picked up a Lakeland fumble and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to make the score 12 to 6. Bonners stopped Lakleland on three downs and got the ball back. Collin Vickers scored on a 30 yard run and Gabe Hubbard converted the PAT for a 19 to 6 Badger lead. Lakeland would score on 4th down and 15 but missed the PAT and would trail 19 to 12. Vickers would score again from 30 yards out, behind the good blocking of the offensive line of Mitch Kramer, Ben Boger, Christopher English, Warren Carle, Eduardo Perez, tight end Chad Guthrie and fullback Tanner Liermann. Jason Shutes added a kick and Bonners led 27 to 12. Bonners would complete the scoring in the 4th quarter with a five yard run by Ethan Ellis and the kick by Shutes for a 35 to 12 lead. Badgers 35, Lakeland 12 final score BCMS football's final home games will be Thursday, October 20, with the 7th grade starting at 4:30 p.m. |
