The Northwest Athletics, a fast-pitch softball
team of five Bonners Ferry girls and six
Rathdrum girls, took second place in the Spokane
Fourth of July Shootout tournament.
Eight teams from Idaho, Washington and Montana
took part in the three-day tourney.
The girls, ages 8 through 11, played in the sun
and the heat, battling fierce competition, and
the A's kicked off with a 9-3 win over the
Bitterroot, Montana, Sparks, but the games got
tougher on Saturday, with the A's falling to the
Spokane Cougars, 8-5, and to the Coeur d'Alene
Wildfire by a heart-breaking 12-1.
Sunday's losses in pool play made for a tough
Monday, but they faced up to the challenge,
downing the Montana Fury, 9-3, and shutting out
the Nine Mile Falls Lakesiders, 3-0.
The A's faced the Coeur d'Alene Crash for the
championship, but fell, 16-7.
The second place finish qualified the A's to
travel this weekend to Coeur d'Alene, where they
compete in the Idaho State Tournament. |
