County Middle School student was on the list. For their outstanding writing efforts, five first-place Idaho students will receive a certificate and $100 savings bond for themselves, plus $100 for their classrooms. Winning essayists are Elle Bickford and Jadon Buck of Eliza Hart Spalding Elementary School in Boise (Meridian School District); Matteya Proctor of Deary Elementary School; William Strahan of Kamiah Middle School; and Jessica Farris of Sandpoint High School. Teachers of these young writers are, respectively, Heidi Bond, Vernita Proctor, Rebecca Crockett and John Hastings. In the sixth through eight grade category, BCMS student Victor "Ryne" Rae, a student in Kelly Hinthorn's class, earned an honorable mention. "In this year’s essays, students shared personal connections to Idaho’s forests, and grappled with the need to be informed about natural resources, economics and sustainable management in order to make wise consumer choices,” said IFPC’s Education Coordinator, Michelle Youngquist. As one second grade writer observed, “I think it is very important that people take care of our forests so that we continue having these important products in our daily lives.” This year’s winning essays will soon be posted at www.idahoforests.org/essay_contest.htm. The Idaho Forest Products Commission provides information and education programs about Idaho’s forests and the forest products sector. |
