Cruz backs Labrador's gubernatorial bid
November 2, 2017
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz announced Wednesday he is endorsing Raúl Labrador’s bid to become Idaho’s next governor.

“I’ve worked closely with Raúl Labrador over the past few years to advance conservative policies for our country and I can tell you he is one of the most effective, dedicated, and honest men I have known,” said Cruz. “His fierce commitment to conservative values, his respect for our Constitution, and his pledge to making government accountable to the people will make him a great governor and I’m proud to endorse his candidacy.”

Senator Ted Cruz is highly regarded as one of the foremost leaders in the conservative movement in the United States Senate. As the longest serving Solicitor General in Texas history from 2003 to 2008, Senator Ted Cruz has first-hand experience with the skills necessary to be successful in state government.

As Solicitor General, Senator Cruz argued eight cases before the United States Supreme Court, advancing conservative causes from his elected position. In the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, Cruz drafted the amicus brief signed by the attorney generals of 31 states, including Idaho, which said that the Washington, D.C., handgun ban should be struck down as infringing upon the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

“I’m honored to have Senator Ted Cruz’s support,” said Labrador. “Ted Cruz and I both know that conservative policies, like freedom, liberty and personal accountability will do more to improve people’s lives than any government program. And when we can get government out of the way, people will thrive. It’s been a privilege to work alongside Senator Cruz in Congress to promote policies that support these ideals, and I’m humbled to have his support in this campaign.”

Labrador’s service in the Idaho Legislature and in Congress clearly shows his resolute commitment to advancing conservative principles in government.

From his unwavering support for pro-life policies, his strict adherence to the Constitution, to his iron-clad opposition to deficit spending and tax hikes, Labrador’s solid conservative record distinguishes him from the crowded field of candidates in the Republican primary.

Labrador, 49, represents Idaho’s First Congressional District. He and his wife Becca are proud of their five children and one daughter-in-law, and are happily expecting their first grandchild.
