Idaho's top general to retire |

Major General Gary L. Sayler announced last week
that he will retire October 31 after more than
seven years as Adjutant General of the Idaho
National Guard, capping an exemplary 45-year
military career.
Sayler began his career as a second lieutenant
in the U.S. Air Force and received his
commission through the Reserve Officer Training
Corps. His initial operational assignment began
in 1972 in Thailand, flying combat missions
throughout Southeast Asia.
He joined the Idaho Air National Guard in 1977
as a Weapons Systems Officer for the 124th
Tactical Reconnaissance Group. He later flew
combat missions in the F4-G over Iraq during
operations Southern Watch and Provide Comfort.
“The highlight of my military career has been
the honor of serving the civilians, soldiers,
airmen and families of the Idaho Military
Division,” Sayler said. “I’ve been blessed with
support from a tremendous community here in
Idaho and will always be grateful for that.”
Sayler’s list of command assignments includes
Flight Commander, Deputy Commander for
Resources, Operations Group Commander, Fighter
Group Vice-Commander, Wing Commander and
Assistant Adjutant General-Idaho Air National
Guard. During his career he flew the T-29, the
F-4C/D/E/G, the RF-4C and the C-130E.
Sayler has received numerous awards and
decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the
Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal with
silver oak leaf cluster.
As Adjutant General, Sayler serves at the
pleasure of the Governor and is responsible for
the training, readiness and management of all
units of the Idaho National Guard.
He also is director of the Idaho Military
Division, which includes the Office of Emergency
Management, Public Safety Communications and the
Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy. |
