Whirlwind week at BCMS

Dr. Adam Cox helps get staff get ready for the coming school year with a presentation on strategies.
By Principal David Miles II

What a week! Boundary County Middle School opened its doors Tuesday to a crowded building. We have about 20 more students than anticipated pushing our school count to about 360 students. We are glad so many people are enrolling in our school as we strive to provide the best environment for students to grow and learn.

Staff enjoyed several presentations and workshops prior to opening day with students. They learned Love and Logic and co-founder Dr. Foster Cline. They learned strategies from Dr. Adam Cox. They learned how to use several new programs our district has adopted. They also learned lots of technology based strategies from U of I’s Cassidy Hall. It was a whirlwind of a week.

Sixth graders were able to experience a bit of middle school before school began during our transition day. They learned about each of their core classes and teachers and engaged in some ice breaker and team building activities.

Teachers in the social studies department earned gold in the BCMS Olympics.
Our opening assembly featured the Olympic talents of our teachers. It was quite the sight to see our professional educators acting so silly yet so competitive at the same time. In the end, the social studies department took home the gold with their weight lifting skills.

Students have had a busy week learning our new expectations; which are Safe, Civil, and Productive; dealing with new bell tones (I think I finally found one that works), and already taking benchmark assessments to determine their current academic standing.

Thursday the eighth grade athletics will begin. Our fall sports include football, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading. All students will have to complete the sports packet and have a valid physical along with a preseason drug screening to participate.

We will host our annual Open House on Monday, September 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., which will coincide with instrument night for band students from 5:30 to 8 p.m. We hope to see many parents so we have a chance to introduce ourselves and answer any questions the community has about our school.

We have several students working to help the City of Bonners Ferry receive a grant from the state to improve healthy eating and activity for children in our community. I believe this includes hosting Mayor Sims and a grant committee at our school next week! We are both excited and nervous about our role in helping the City win the High-5 grant.

Our school will also be participating in Constitution Day on Thursday, September 15. Advisory classes will be offering various activities centered on the Constitution and its importance to our country.

BCMS is currently looking for parents who would be interested in discussing ideas and sharing information from Boundary County Middle School. We are also interested in eighth grade parents willing to be the eighth grade promotion dance committee. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact Principal David Miles II at BCMS to sign up and leave contact information.
