Badger Boys win District Tournament, advance to
state; Badger Girls lose one-run heartbreaker |
May 11, 2016 |
In exciting baseball and softball action
yesterday, the Bonners Ferry Badgers Baseball
team walked through the District
Tournament undefeated, winning the Championship
game defeating Timberlake 9-2. The Badgers
now move on to the Idaho State Tournament. Badger pitcher Vince Bennett was named the Intermountain League's MVP for the baseball season. Named to the All-Intermountain League team were Caleb Gering, Jesse Dunham, and Caleb Blackmore. On the Softball side, the BFHS Girls lost their first game against a league opponent yesterday. The Badger Girls had defeated Kellogg 15-0 to take the first District game, then lost a heartbreaker to Timberlake on a controversial umpire call to end the game in extra innings in the District Championship game against Timberlake. Entering the bottom of the extra-innings ninth, with Timberlake leading by two runs, the Badger girls put a run across the plate to pull within one. They advanced a runner to second base. A Badger batter then hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop, who bobbled the ball as the Badger runner from secon base advanced to third base, then on to home. The run went up on the scoreboard, tying the game at five, with the Badgers still up to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning. At that point, the home plate umpire stopped the game, and stated that the Badger baserunner had interfered with the Timberlake shortstop fielding the ball in the run from second to third, called that baserunner out, and took the run off the scoreboard, making the score 5-4 in favor of Timberlake. The field umpire, who was a mere few feet away from the play and was right on top of the play, had made no indication that there was interference. The 5-4 score held up for Timberlake as the game ended in the ninth inning. Badger pitcher Kadi Bateman was awarded Intermountain League MVP honors for the year. Named to the all Intermountain League team were Trinity Golder, Kassy Skeen, and Jorryn Bennett. The Badger Girls will next play for second place at Districts on Thursday. The winner of that game travels to a play-in game in Orofino, with the winner of that game advancing to the State Tournament.
