Valley View students walk the walk on
National Walk to School Day |
October 4,2014 |
Valley View Elementary School students had a
brisk and fun walk, from the downtown City
Parking lot, all the way up the south hill, then
across neighborhoods to their school as they
took part in National Walk to School Day last
Wednesday.
Valley View physical education teacher John Beck
has organized the school's annual participation
in National Walk to School Day for the past
several years. This year, he is considering a
second organized Walk to School later in the
school year in the spring.
For this walk, the weather was almost
spring-like, with just a hint of fall chill in
the air. After first posing for a big group
photograph, the crowd of Valley View Golden
Eagles, each accompanied by an adult or two (who
took part in the walk after a double-dog dare
from Principal Gary Pflueger) trooped from the
City Parking lot, across the Veterans' Memorial
Park, up the stairs to the highway, then up the
South Hill to the school.
"I frequently tell the kids at school 'Our
bodies are made to move, so let's get moving!"
explained Mr. Beck as he addressed the crowd
before the walk started. All moved
enthusiastically on the walk, motivated not only
by the reward of improved fitness, but perhaps
also by the knowledge of the breakfast pizza
awaiting all at the Valley View cafeteria at the
end of the walk.
You may want to start getting in shape now for
what could be a Spring 2015 Walk to School Day!
In the meantime, take a look at the photo of the
line of students and their accompanying adults
stretched out all along the South Hill.
