Pawsitive Works coming home |
February 6, 2014 |
Pawsitive Works recently received a grant to
make a difference in the Bonners Ferry
community. The organization piloted its efforts
in Boundary County in 2009 and has its
administrative headquarters here. “Due to some unforeseen barriers, we were unable to continue helping the youth and shelter dogs of our home town," said Karen Schumacher, founding Executive Director. “It has been and continues to be one of our organizations hopes to serve the community that helped us get started – we’re thrilled that we finally have the opportunity to do that!” Pawsitive Works helps at-risk youth through a program that pairs the youth with a shelter dog for five weeks, three times a week. The youth trains the dog with professional assistance and caring volunteers. The reading and writing assignments and the in-class activities all work together to help the youth learn some vital life skill lessons that assist them in becoming productive community members. The program is highly enriching for the dogs and is a great way to prepare them for a new forever home. Currently, the program serves communities in Coeur d’Alene, Seattle, Boise and Sandpoint. Before Pawsitive Works can begin running the program here in Bonners Ferry, they are looking for a few community members who would like to be on a task force to help put together a few pieces that will ensure continued successful operations in Bonners Ferry. “We’re not asking for a lot of time, just a lot of heart,” Schumacher said. "Two hours a month will make a huge difference. We need the power of community to help make this an outstanding opportunity for our youth and area dogs." If you have a little time, some ideas and energy to help, They want to hear from you! They hope to meet in March to begin planning.
