By Principal David Miles II Boundary County Middle School Please congratulate Myla McKechnie for placing first in our local region for the VFW “Patriot Pen” essay contest! She also placed third overall in the northern district VFW (Sandpoint, Priest River, Clark Fork, and Bonners Ferry) and second in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary version of the essay contest. Please thank our students for raising $1,085.33 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Students voluntarily participated in a “Penny War” event, which was quite the battle. Congratulations to Ryne Rae for receiving “Honorable Mention” recognition in the Idaho Forest Products Commission Essay Contest. You can find out more here: http://www.idahoforests.org/essay_winners.htm. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) tutoring is available now. Thanks to a grant for Gear-Up, we will offer tutoring two nights a week on Tuesday and Wednesday. The tutoring will primarily focus on eighth grade STEM, but will also be available to help others as practical. Students in need? We have a collection of hygiene items for those students who are in need of them. The efforts of the Coalition for Children and Families Phoenix Project will be providing these items via our school. If you are in need of such items, or know of others who are in need, please contact a teacher, principal, or counselor at BCMS to access these items. To accompany the activity day planned on December 19 (the last day before winter break), Student Council has planned a dodgeball tournament. Permission slips must be signed and turned in to the office before anyone can play. The Food Drive for Fill the Bus will be January 13 to 16. The themes are as follows ... Monday-Cans, Tuesday-Boxes, Wednesday-Soups, Thursday-Cereal & Pasta. Competition will be based on points (+1 for theme appropriate donations and -1 for not following theme ... sabotaging). Winners will be the Food Bank and also the grade who has the most points by 1:10 p.m. January 16. BCMS students will compete in a Spelling Bee on January 14. ACT testing for eighth graders will be January 15. This is part of the Gear Up Program. In appreciation of Human Rights Day, the local Human Rights Group in association with local parent Kiondra Bullock will be presenting a program on January 21. The student council will also be conducting some follow up programs during the week. Ski dates are set. Please see schedule below. Common Core testing coming this spring.
