The 2013 Boundary County Fair is off to a great
start, and though it's early, there's magic in
the air! The crowds aren't all that big as yet,
that'll come closer to the weekend, but
everything is up and ready for their arrival. Right now, too, many areas are off limits as judges make the tough determination in naming the best of the best at this year's county fair. That all changes at 6:30 this evening, when the opening ceremonies take place in the indoor arena. Perhaps the greatest feat of magic on a day like today is beating the heat ... an inordinate number of attendees seem to be sporting sno-cones! Afterward, everything will be thrown open and we can see all the amazing bounty of an industrious and talented community. On Thursday, there'll be a lot going on. 4H and FFA swine judging begins at 8 a.m. in the indoor arena and lasts until noon, and all display and exhibit areas open at 9 a.m. You can enter your vegetable critter in the Exhibit Hall Annex from 9:30 a.m. to noon; judging begins at 12:30 p.m. 4H/FFA and open class rabbit judging takes place in the rabbit barn from noon to 2 p.m., during which the barn will be closed as those who've entered their lapins strive to ensure they don't muss up their hare-dos. (I know ... terrible pun! Insert groan here!) Beef judging takes place in the Indoor Arena from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Music will fill the air from the gazebo from 1 to 6 p.m., and a variety of games will be played on the Memorial Hall lawn. A major tug-of-war will be fought in the outdoor arena at 5:30 p.m. Aviators will be on the Memorial Hall Lawn at 3 p.m. for the paper airplane flying contest, and entries in the peach pie baking contest can be submitted from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Top Hat Bakery on the Memorial Hall lawn; judging takes place at 6 p.m. 4H and FFA goat showing kicks off in the indoor arena at 3:30 p.m.; 4H/FFA lamb fitting and showing begins at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, when the big crowds show up, have a ton of events going on as well; most of them the folks involved already know. You might want to mark down a couple, though. The 4H/FFA Buyer's Social kicks off on the Memorial Hall lawn at 5 p.m. Friday; the Market Animal Sale takes place at 7 p.m. in the Indoor Arena. On Saturday, the Fair Parade wends through downtown Bonners Ferry at noon; check in and line up starts at 11 a.m. in the fairgrounds parking lot. The ever fun lawn mower races begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the outdoor arena; instead of an admission fee, bring a non-perishable food item. The cheery seed spitting contest takes place on the Memorial Hall lawn at 3 p.m.; the watermelon eating contest at 4 p.m. The fair caps off with Family Fun Night at 6:30 p.m. in the outdoor arena, followed by the Family Fun Night Sweetheart's Dance, lasting until 9 p.m. Both events are free and open to all. |
