From Thursday, April 25, to Saturday, April 27,
four Bonners Ferry High School students walked
to Sandpoint after reading the book Walk Across
America by Peter Jenkins in Mr. Bonnell’s junior
English class.
The book is about Jenkins’s journey traveling on
foot across the United States. His final
destination was the Statue of Liberty in New
York.
The students, juniors Bradley Thompson, Nic
Savage, Rebecca Lundgren, and senior Emily
Decker, decided to walk from the golf course in
Bonners Ferry to the statue of liberty at the
Sandpoint Beach after reading the book.
Past high school students have attempted to do
this before.

Lundgren was the main orchestrator behind the
group walk and had actually been considering it
for several months.
“My brother had tried to do it, but he didn’t
make it," she said, which was her main reason
for wanting to make the walk.
Lundgren wanted to see if she would succeed and
asked the other students to join her. They
agreed.
In all the trip took about 16 hours, which
the students broke up into different time
intervals. They walked from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
on Thursday, 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday,
and for about an hour on Saturday.
Despite this time break-up, it was no easy feat.
“We had to push ourselves to the limit,” said
Savage. “People think it is so easy to walk it,
but they don’t realize how much effort it
takes.”

“It was rough,” Lundgren admitted, as all four
of the students showed off their sunburned skin
and noses.
The students were so tired that there wasn’t
much excitement when finally reaching their
destination at Sandpoint Beach.
“It was extremely anti-climatic getting to the
statue of liberty,” said Thompson, "It was like,
‘oh, we're here.’”
“But getting to the hotel was like the gates of
heaven,” Decker added.
When asked if they walked back to Bonners Ferry,
all four laughed.
“No way!” Lundgren chortled. |
