Remembering ... Lest we forget
|
April 22, 2013 |
May 27 is but a month away, and only a hard
corps are working on the plans as yet. Memorial
Day. This community always remembers, but the
remembrance, so solemn and fitting, doesn't
happen of its own accord.
Two people showed up at the last American Legion
planning meeting ... a wing nut and a squid.
Both insist this is nothing new; everything will
come together. Boundary County has always
appreciated our veterans.
I was asked not to write that this community's
Memorial Day is right now resting on
just two backs. Strong backs, to be sure. They
will do it.
This community, they insist, will not forget.
Not as long as "they" who served remember.
Not but ten years ago, they who best remembered,
and who organized this community's Memorial Day
remembrances, fought in he "Big War;" they were
seen as "our greatest generation."
Not many of those soldiers are left.
But many soldiers are.
Korea. Vietnam. Chechnya, Bosnia. Iran, Iraq.
Afghanistan ... wherever called, Boundary
County's sons and daughters answer.
A wing nut and a squid are working to get up a
parade, an observance of why we're proud and why
we gather to remember those who can't be here;
and they are doing well.
Memorial Day is but a month away. For so long,
old soldiers stood behind the planning and did
the work.
A cadre now grown smaller, to two veterans who
carry the faith and trust that ours is a
community that will never forget.
