weekend
|
May 14, 2012 |
"Swingin' on a Star," the award-winning Bonners
Ferry children's choir, takes the stage at the
Pearl at 7 p.m. Friday May 18. The celebration
of Bonners Ferry's amazing talented youth
continues at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, when "On
Stage at the Pearl" presents Gabriel Feller and
Lauren Skye Palmer in concert.
This is a great opportunity to show your support
for the work of all of these young artists. They
are truly young professionals. Tickets for
"Swingin' on a Star" on Friday are $5 at the
door. Tickets for "On Stage" with Gabe and
Lauren on Saturday are $8 at the door. The Cafe
at the Pearl will open at 6 p.m. for snacks,
desserts, and beverages on Friday and at 6 p.m.
for homemde soup, bread, and desserts on
Saturday.
"Swingin' on a Star" performed last Saturday at
Silverwood Themepark. The children's choir was
started in 1997 by conductor Vicki Blake
Thompson. Over the years this choir has been
awarded superior ratings at every choral
festival they've participated in.
They've sung by invitation with the Spokane
Children's Choir and at the Idaho State Music
Teacher's Convention in Boise. "Swingin' on a
Star" has also worked with the Seattle and
Tacoma Children's Choirs as well as attending a
national festival in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
Gabriel
Feller, a high school senior from Bonners Ferry,
says he can't remember a time when he wasn't
passionate about music. He started learning the
piano at age five and was tackling difficult
classical pieces by age 10.
In his teen years, he began drifting away from
music theory and stepped into the world of music
as art. He started playing by ear, experimenting
with rock, jazz, and blues pieces.
Improvisation, then, became the basis for his
own original pieces.
Gabe discovered his singing talent early on, as
well as a natural ability to play acoustic and
electric guitar. His expressive voice and piano
playing lend themselves to a style reminiscent
of Elton John and Billy Joel.
Lauren
Skye Palmer is a 15-year-old performer
originally from the United Kingdom.
She began her vocal training in "Swingin' on a
Star" children's choir at age 11 where she found
out she could sing! Lauren then branched out
into acting and dancing.
Since then, she has carried lead roles in
multiple local productions and theatrical
events, and would like to go professional and
train in London.
Lauren performed in the recent production of
"Walk a Mile," and belted out the leading role
of Mayzie in "Seussical" last June. She was
awarded a position in the prestigious summer
long training program at the Missoula Children's
Theater in 2011.
When she can find the time, Lauren Skye enjoys
composing at the piano, writing, and playing her
violin.
The Pearl Theater is located in Bonners Ferry at
7160 Ash Street, just south of the casino, on
