Over 200 kids turn out for tree lighting
December 3, 2011
By Karen Standal

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus (the big people dressed in red), put bright smiles on hundreds of little faces during their first official visit to Bonners Ferry since around this same time last year.
What a wonderful night it was, Friday, November 25, as the Christmas tree was lit at the Georgia Mae Plaza and Christmas Carols flowed into the beautiful evening!

Mrs. Santa Claus walked the crowd and talked to many adults (they still believe in Santa, too!) and children.

We also made mention of the beautiful fact that Mr. Richard Kelson for 30 years quietly supplied the Bonners Ferry Community Christmas Tree from the kindness of his heart. We remember him with affection and gratitude.

The children were just amazing ... all 200 hundred of them! Little faces hopeful, smiling at Santa and receiving their special stocking to have a delicious handmade gingerbread man and a list to help them go to each store downtown to receive a small gift. The merchants were wonderful, with their beautifully decorated windows and open doors till 7 p.m.!

Now, let us not forget that the Gingerbread competition is still ongoing. Please bring your Gingerbread creations to the museum between 10a.m. and 4 p.m. on December 9 and 10. They will be kept through December 17 ... with that whole week, beginning December 14, being devoted to public open house. Come and see the creations and remember to do a penney vote for your favorite. There will be refreshments and "goodies" to buy also.

The judging will be done December 16, with a first prize of $75, second prize of $50 and a third prize of $25.

All money made from this competition/exhibit will be donated to the BoCo program of Bonners Ferry. This provides schoolchildren in need with a backpack of food for every weekend. The food is brought to those in need from Second Harvest Foods in Spokane. A worthy place to place our pennies!

Recipes can be picked up for basic gingerbread dough and royal icing at the Bonners Ferry Herald and at JoJo's office for KBFI.

At the Disabled American Veterans bazaar today, I will have a table set up with recipes for gingerbread, ideas and "goodies" to sell and sample. I will also answer any of your questions about the competition ... so come and say hi and get creative and ready to bring Christmas into your kitchen and share with your neighbors!
