School district saves $41,000 in
transportation costs

In cooperation with a Idaho State Department of
Education Transportation specialist last year,
Boundary County School District 101
transportation staff took a close look at all
the school's bus routes and implemented changes,
keeping the buses running on time and
maintaining the district's long-standing school
bus safety record.
 With
a close look at all the routes, and keeping in
mind the needs of students and patrons, two
regular routes were consolidated and ten more
were reconfigured, and the result is a savings
of around $41,000 in fuel and school bus
maintenance.
Currently, between 750 and 800 students ride the
bus to school each day on 15 routes, and many
more are bused around the region for games and
extracurricular activities. Buses running
regular school routes travel more than 18,000
per month, and buses traveling to those
extracurricular activities log an additional
3,500 to 5,000 miles per month.
During busy times, as many as 23 buses are
traveling North Idaho roads on a given day.
Thanks to the review, the district's mechanics
implemented a more efficient maintenance and
safety inspection rotation to reduce wear and
tear to the greatest extent possible. |
