Disappointed in Commissioner's Refugee Resolution
December 14, 2015
December 14, 2015

To the Editor:

I was disappointed in the Commissioners adoption of the anti refugee statement.

ISIS is a serious concern; but blaming refugees and Muslims in general for ISIS activities is like blaming Christians for the actions of the KKK. Both are extremist groups that are not representative of the majority.

I heard allegations that the current vetting process for Refugees is flawed; there is probably room for improvement, but the 18-24 month immigration process has worked well. There have been virtually NO incidents with refugees that have gone through the process. Any refugees that survive the process would likely be a good addition to our community. However, it is incredibly unlikely that refugees would want to come here or be placed here by any agency! Why would they? We do not have the economic base.

Why was all of this time even spent on this statement? It looks to be a politically motivated overreaction to an implausible rumor. This sort of overreaction is counterproductive and escalates the conflict rather than solves a problem.

I think the Commissioners, and our populace, have better things to do.
