Naples school bearing the brunt?

Despite pleas from Naples parents voiced at
school board meetings since February of this
year, Naples Elementary School has been forced
to support extremely large combined classes.
The school board district policy manual
recommends a maximum size of 17 students for
combined classes for K-third grade.
With the board’s decision not to replace our
retiring third grade teacher, Ms. Doolin, Naples
School currently has 28 students in a combined
second/third grade class – with only one
teacher.
That is 11 students more then the recommended
maximum number of 17.
Naples School has a third/fourth grade combined
class with 28 students as well – again with only
one teacher.
How can we sit by and allow our children to be
in grossly oversized combination classes?
At Valley View, there is a combined class of 14
students, as well as other one grade classes
where parents may place their children. At all
three elementary schools, the largest class size
is 29 at Mt. Hall – does it not seem ridiculous
that Naples has the two next largest class sizes
– and the teacher is trying to teach to two
grades at once?
While we have excellent teachers and staff at
all our schools, there is no way to provide
quality education when our schools are
understaffed.
Please attend the next school board meeting at 6
p.m. Tuesday, September 10 in the Middle School
Library and voice your support. |
