Taking more from returning soldiers |
June 4, 2013 |
It has recently come to my attention that when
the Kalispell's 495th CSSB returns after a year
long deployment in Afghanistan this September,
they will be required to participate in two
parades and attend an additional event. Possibly lasting two to six hours. These events are being planned for the day the soldiers will arrive home from Afghanistan. Right after they step off the plane. I feel that planning an event that will take the soldiers away from their families moments after their return is very uncaring and inconsiderate towards the soldiers and the soldiers' families needs. I realize that this is a Montana National Guard unit, but they do have family every where, including Bonners Ferry. I addressed the 495th command on their Facebook page on this issue and was quoted "Currently there are no plans made. When the plan is finalized it will be put out formally through the rear detachment and Family Programs." After others commenting their displeasure for this plan, my comments were removed. The soldiers and the soldiers' families are not being asked if this is something they would like to participate in prior to the plans being finalized. Putting soldiers on display for up to six hours on the day they return and taking them away from their families is cruel. The Guard states over and over that family matters. I don't believe this is a reflection of showing that family matters. Further more, I believe that citizens of the Kalispell community would understand the need for the soldiers to spend that first day home with their families and not at required events! |
