Badger track shines on rainy day in Kellogg |
April 14, 2015 |
A rainy morning turned into a decent afternoon
at the Kellogg Track last Saturday. In spite of
occasional gusts of wind, the sun broke through
and made for improved times, distances, and
heights. Both Badger track teams finished 4th
out of 12 teams, the boys scoring 186 and the
girls scoring 192 team points. The track season
is now past the halfway point, but as times
continue to drop, coaches like the chances of
seeing athletes at Meridian for State.
Coaches George Hays and Keith Carey were
particularly impressed by several young
athletes. “Amanda Bauer had a great day,” said
Coach Hays. In her first day of competition,
Amanda ran a 15.62 in the 100m sprint and also
leapt to a distance of 13-01 in the long jump.
Coaches also pointed out the strong running of
Nikolous Bertling, who ran a 25.65 in the 200m.
“I think he’s gaining confidence in the
running,” said Coach Carey.
In the throwers circles, freshman Haley Wenk
took 5th in the shot put (30-05) and 4th in the
Discus (85-06). Badger throwers also did well in
the discus. Junior Jack Wade took second in the
discus with a throw of 112-07, CJ McCulla right
behind at third made a toss of 106-02.
Senior Mackenzie Mendenhall returned to action,
winning both the 100m hurdles (17.71) and the
300m hurdles (49.91). Mackenzie also took second
in the long jump with a leap of 14-10. Fellow
senior Kendra Urbaniak took second in the pole
vault with a height of 7-06. Both Urbaniak and
Mendenhall helped the girls sprint medley team
to a second place finish of 2:08.83.
The Badger distance team gave stellar
performances with young runners showing their
potential and veterans cashing in dividends from
experience. Freshman Jordan Young dropped four
seconds off her 800 time to claim second and a
2:44 finish. Senior Tucker Cavender had a strong
day, taking second in the 3200m (10:54) and 5th
in the 1600m (5:24).
It was the freshmen in the mile who really
impressed on Saturday. “We said at the beginning
of the race, ‘Hey, let’s break 6 minutes today,’
and they really stepped up,” distance coach
Tyler Warner said of Dawson Thomas (5:47),
Malachi Rivkin(5:55) and Neil Martin (5:57). All
three times were personal records. Nick
Magdaleno also achieved a personal record,
running a season best 6:21. “To have all of our
freshmen PR in the mile is great. Those three
guys are some of the hardest workers in practice
and it is paying off for them. It also helps
that they’ve had great upper classmen like
Tucker, Nolan, and Alva to set an example for
them.”
In all, the Badgers still have a number of
athletes ranked in top 10 for the 3A
classification in Idaho. Jacob Perkins ranks 6th
in the 800 as of April 14. Mackenzie Mendenhall
ranks 5th in the long jump, 1st in the 100m
hurdles and 2nd in the 300m hurdles. Warren
Carle is also ranked 10th in the 300 hurdles.
Breanna Copeland ranks 5th in the Discus. Kendra
Urbaniak is in a four-way tie for 9th in the
pole vault. Tucker Cavender is ranked 10th in
the 3200. “Tucker especially is a classic case
of persistence in this group. They’ve all put in
so much work to be where they are. They’re
setting a great example of hard work and
excellence for our young athletes.”
The Badgers went back to Kellogg on Tuesday,
April 14, and will travel to Freeman High School
(Washington) for the Freeman Invite on Friday at
4 p.m.
