Badger Boys' and Girls' Varsity get overtime wins

Badger Boys win in overtime
The Bonners Ferry Badger Boys' basketball team won a hard-fought match against the 5A Coeur d'Alene Junior Varsity squad last night in Coeur d'Alene. Bonners Ferry held the lead in the closing seconds of the game, until Coeur d'Alene's Jake Grinde hit a three pointer to throw Coeur d'Alene's home crowd into a frenzy and the game into overtime.

Once in overtime, Bonners Ferry took control, finishing of the Junior Vikings by a score of 53-46.

Caleb Blackmore led the Badger scoring with 16 points, followed closely by Wyatt Nelson with 15. Collin Stone put in 12 points, and Kaleb Stockton had 7. Pat O'Hara added 3 for the Badgers.

The Badger Boys' team is on the road again tonight against Intermountain League rival Timberlake.


Badger Girls knock off #1 team in overtime
Throughout the season, the Timberlake Tigers have been on top of the poll as the number one ranked 3A girls' team in Idaho, having won all their games except for two games against larger metropolitan Spokane schools, and running undefeated through their Intermountain League conference.

Until they ran up against the Bonners Ferry Badgers last Tuesday, February 3. Bonners Ferry defeated Timberlake's Tigers in overtime 68-63.

The Badger girls, who started the Intermountain League season 0-3, have now come back to defeat each of the other teams in the League, including Kellogg and Priest River who have both also spent time in the state's top five polls. The Badger girls have now claimed a tie for second place in the Intermountain League, going into the District Tournament which begins on Monday, February 9.

In defeating Idaho's #1 team, the Badger girls presented a balanced scoring attack, which overcame the 32 points of Timberlake's Allison Kirby (fifteen of those points coming on three point shots). For the Badgers, Savannah Woods again had a double-double with 17 points to go with her collection of 10 rebounds. Jasmine Hill also scored 17, while Kerstin Oxford put in 13. Abby Skeen scored 10 points and had 6 assists, and freshman Miranda Wenk had 5. Abby Davis, Jaiden Everhart, and Regan Byers scored two points each.

In girls' basketball action last Saturday, January 31, Bonners Ferry fell to Stillwater Christian in a close match, 39-36. In that game, Kerstin Oxford led the Badger scorers with 9 points.

The Badger Girls' JV team finished their season with yet another win, as they defeated the Timberlake JVs. The Girls' JV Badgers finish their season with 19 wins and a single loss.

Next up for the BFHS Girls' Varsity team is the District Tournament. Their first game in the tournament is Monday, February 9, against the Priest River Spartans. The game will be at the North Idaho College gym, and begins at 4:30 p.m.
