Genevieve
"Jean" Mettler left this world peacefully to be
with Jesus, January 12, 2014. A Celebration of
Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February
15, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 675 Black Oak
Drive, Medford, Oregon. She was born September 30, 1932, in Bonners Ferry to parents William Richard Hoagland and Genevieve (Greer) Hoagland. She was raised in Spokane, graduated from North Central High and attended Washington State University. Jean spent her summers during high school living with her grandparents in Bonners Ferry to work in a confectioners shop. She was active in drama throughout her high school years. She carried that talent and experience into playing many leading roles for the Spokane Civic Theatre. Jean met her husband, Chuck, in Spokane as he was serving our country with the Air Force at Fairchild Air Force Base. They met while on a double-date, and fate took hold as they were not each other's date. Less than a year later, May 22, 1954, they were wed. After Chuck's discharge from the Air Force, the couple moved to Pennsylvania for one year before returning to the northwest. They made homes in Spokane, Wenatchee, Washington, and Beaverton, Oregon before finally settling in Medford, Oregon. Jean was always involved volunteering at her children's schools. Active in the PTA, she was one of those who actually attended those evening meetings. She played a big role in the church, holding weekly Bible Studies, organizing and hosting potlucks, teaching Sunday school, working in the nursery during the church service, and basically filling in and providing fellowship whenever and wherever needed. Over the years Jean added a special flair to a number of businesses in Medford, including Modern Appliance, Sears, Harry and David, and the YMCA. Jean was a voracious reader, a fabulous cook/baker and a wonderful homemaker. She so much enjoyed a long walk, whether it be just up the hill and around the neighborhood or in the peaceful setting along the river, up at the cabin. Jean was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, and a special friend to so many. She was preceded in death by her two younger brothers, Bill Hoagland and Tom Hoagland. She is survived by Chuck, her loving husband of 59 years; her four children and their spouses, and six grandchildren: Richard and Terry (Hald) Mettler of Portland, Oregon; their sons, Jensen and Scott, and daughter, Molly; Karen (Mettler) and Jim Fieguth of Ashland, Oregon; their son, Tyler; David and Karen (Holzkamp) Mettler of Portland, Oregon; their daughters, Grace and Genna; and Matthew and Lisa (Altenburger) Mettler of Medford. In lieu of flowers please remember the Medford Family YMCA for any donations in Jean's memory. |
