In 1944, while working for the Great Northern Railway, he entered the Army, serving in World War II. At the end of the war and after his discharge, he went to work for Pete Carmack and his son, Bill, in their sawmill at Meadow Creek. The winter of 1949, he tended bar at the Moyie Club for Emmett and Ruby Walters and in the spring of 1950 went to work for the Moyie River Lumber Company Sawmill. In April 1953, he went back to work for the Great Northern Railway and worked there until injured on the job while working on the bridge crew in Canada in 1972. Hobert also worked part-time for Winston Cook and Ray Houck, doing small engine repair at their shop for many years. Hobert adopted Helen’s two children from a previous marriage, Gaila (White) Dobberthein and Stephen White and together Hobert and Helen had three more children, Richard (Rick) White, Wanda White and Annette White. Hobert’s greatest enjoyment was gardening, to include fruit and nut trees. He was an avid promoter of the Farmers Market and past president of that organization. On Thursdays you would always find Hobert at John Sater’s Auction. He loved a good bargain but, enjoyed the time spent with his friends at a place that provided a warm and friendly atmosphere. Hobert also loved the great outdoors that Boundary County provided. He spent late summers picking huckleberries and enjoyed countless hunting seasons. Hobert spent the later part of his life in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his son and daughter-in-law Rick and Sally (Phillips) White. Dad lived with us for six wonderful years prior to needing a nursing care environment. Hobert was active in the Fountain Valley Senior Center and attended Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, where he made many friends. Hobert passed away at the age of 87 at the Valley Vista Long Term Care Facility, Sandpoint, on Sunday April 21, 2013, after a long battle with dementia. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen White, sisters Maxine Kucera, Fern Carmack and Twila White and brother Douglas White. Hobert is in God’s garden now and is likely giving produce away at Heaven’s Farmers Market. A memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. |
