John Timothy "Tim" Day, 65, Eastport, died of
natural causes November 9 in Coeur d'Alene. A
memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at
the Veteran's Center, located in the Senior
Hospitality Center, 6635 Lincoln Street. Tim came to Boundary County after serving more than 30 years in the Los Angeles, California, Police Department. He and his sister, Katherine, purchased the historic Good Grief Tavern and transformed it into a family-friendly cafe, which they operated for many years. Day, a Vietnam veteran, served as a police sergeant through some of the most trying times in our nation's history, working the streets during the 1960s riots and upheaval of the Vietnam protests. After arriving in Boundary County, he became a mentor to many local law enforcement officers, and began working with the Sheriff's Office as a volunteer. He later became Chief Deputy, a position he held for about five years. Even after returning to the retired life, he never hesitated to answer when his help was needed. "He was the consummate peace officer," said sheriff's investigator Dave McClelland. "He was a mentor to many law enforcement officers in the county, and all were welcome to stop by to talk and visit. He was always there to help. He loved Boundary County and the people here, and I think he was grateful for the opportunity to give so much back to his community." |
