41st annual 'Orchids and Onions' nominations sought |

For 41 years, Preservation Idaho has hosted the
Orchids and Onions Awards, an awards ceremony
designed to celebrate individuals and
organizations that have made a positive
contribution to historic preservation, as well
as to bring awareness to those projects that
have shown insensitivity to the state’s cultural
history. Orchids are granted to outstanding examples of preservation projects or practices in the following categories: • Excellence in Historic Preservation; • Contribution to Historic Preservation; • Distinguished Preservationist; • Friend of Preservation; • Cultural Heritage Preservation; • Heritage Stewardship; and • Preservation-Sensitive New Construction. • Scott Chandler Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship Onions are awarded to projects that jeopardize Idaho’s cultural resources. Nomination form and a description of Orchid award criteria can be accessed by clicking here. Nominations are due by Friday, March 30. An impartial jury is appointed by Preservation Idaho to review nominations. The jury is composed of preservationists, historians and architects who evaluate nominations based on the information they contain. The award ceremony will take place in the Hayes Auditorium, Boise Public Library, S715 Capitol Boulevard at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, during Preservation Month. A reception and tours of the adjacent Cabin, constructed in 1939 as the Idaho State Forester’s Building and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will be conducted following the awards ceremony.
