Awful aroma is steam, not smoke |

| A noxious aroma emanating from the monofill site near the
Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer has been determined by
investigators from the Alaska Department of Environmental
Conservation to be steam from rotting wood, not an underground
fire as many had feared. The smell was exacerbated by a temperature inversion, which held the steam close to the ground. ADEC investigators and officials with the Palmer Fire Department met at the site Wednesday with Alaska Demolition officials to conduct the investigation. Investigators plan no enforcement action against Alaska Demolition, determining that the company had responded appropriately to the situation and took steps to alleviate the release of the smelly steam. |
