Special weather advisory issued

December 5, 2013
A prolonged and significant freezing rain event is possible through this evening for Anchorage and the surrounding region, according to the National Weather Service, which as issued a special weather statement for the area.

"Some notable changes are occurring in the atmosphere that are resulting in increasing confidence in a prolonged and potentially significant freezing rain event," the statement says. "Increasing south to southwest winds pushing north up Cook Inlet will continue to ride up over a persistent cold dome of below freezing temperatures near the surface through Thursday evening."

Expect freezing drizzle or light freezing rain this morning.

A weak disturbance is expected to move across the area later this morning and into early afternoon, which will help to increase the intensity of the rainfall. Up to one-fifth of an inch of new ice could develop on top of the 0.05 to 0.10 inch of ice that accumulated overnight.

The results may be similar to the November 22 event in terms of total ice accumulation, but over a longer period of time of nine to 15 hours and could approach the severity of the earlier ice storm, especially on exposed surfaces free of existing snow and ice, where a significant glaze may develop.
